FAQ For Adult Orthodontics

What is Orthodontics?
    Ans:
Orthodontics is dedicated to the treatment of irregular teeth and the enhancement of facial appearance. The technical term for crooked, crowded or protruding teeth is "malocclusion," which means "bad bite." Orthodontics involves the design, application, and control of corrective appliances to treat and correct these problems.

How does orthodontic treatment begin?
    Ans:
Orthodontic treatment begins with diagnosis and planning. History, x-rays (both panoramic and entire head pictures), teeth molds, and patient desires are considered. Sometimes, referring physicians and dentists are contacted for discussion to adapt treatment for the patient's specific needs and desires. During this planning phase, the orthodontist will explain any risks and complications, and propose his diagnosis. After the planning, braces will be placed on the patient's teeth based on the requirements.

How long does treatment take with braces?
    Ans:
It depends on the severity of the orthodontic problem. Some minor problems can be corrected in about six months. Full treatment, requiring upper and lower braces, usually is completed in less than two years.

Is orthodontic treatment time consuming?
    Ans:
New orthodontic wires allow patients to come in for visits every 4-8 weeks: therefore, time away from work is minimal.

How old is “too old” to wear braces?
    Ans:
Orthodontic treatment can be completed at any age. Adults can get just as good of a result as children. Sometimes treatment proceeds faster for adults because there is no growth to contend with.

Do my teeth move after my braces are removed?
    Ans:
There is very little movement when braces are removed. All patients are given removable "retainers" to wear primarily at night for about a year to prevent any shifting of teeth.

What kind of braces are available for adult patients?
    Ans:
The different kinds of braces are:

·        Metal/Stainless Steel brackets - Conventional braces that can be made unique with a variety of colorful ties.

·        Ceramic/Clear brackets - Braces are hardly visible because they are crystal-clear and do not discolor with coffee or tea drinkers. These braces cost more than metal braces.

·        Lingual/Invisible braces - Fit behind teeth and fashionable among people in the public eye. These braces are higher in cost, and designated for adult patients only.
